So, today I was having a lovely conversation with someone I don't actually know:

Me: I like to play tennis a lot and usually just hang out.
Person: That's cool. Where are you from?
Me: Well, I moved here from Pittsburgh, Pa.
Person: Oh! I'm from the Southwest too!

1st grade geography anyone? Anyone?

Could Person possibly have meant southwestern Pennsylvania?

I don't know about you, but I'm from Pittsburgh and we don't just call it "the southwest". It's SWPA.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who did that.

Its 'swippa' until I have to explain to someone who's not from SWPA what it means. :)

I still say 'souside' instead of Southside. And its still pop. But I refuse to say 'warsh.' :)

My mom says 'warsh'. Drives me up the wall. (She's from Ohio, and in the area she grew up in 'warsh' is the exception rather than the rule. I'm still not sure where she came up with it.)

Of course, she also says 'leash' like 'lish', to rhyme with 'dish'. Weird.

Sadly no. Later in the conversation he said he grew up in Maine and just traveled to Savannah, GA this year. Just makes me think that much more about people. Maine - Northeast, Savannah - South East.....he wasn't EVEN close.

That was my first thought; I've described my hometown in western Mass. as "out west" when in Boston.

Wow. I'm not American, and even I know that Pennsylvania is not in the Southwest US. (Or indeed southwest anything.)

It's southwest of the...Atlantic Ocean?
28th-Feb-2008 03:20 am (UTC)
more just west, no south. Southwest of um.. Greenland?

Agh, as someone who grew up on the East Coast and moved to the Southwest I want to smack him. Lucky for you you won't be associating with him again.

Well I'm from South Western New York, and that's sorta near Pittsburgh.

Yea, that's the ticket.

Pittsburgh is in the Southwest? Cooool. I'm next door to Arizona now.

You've got me intrigued ... might there be a long form floating around somewhere?

Well, Pittsburgh is in the Southwest. Southwest PA, anyway. Or, at least Pittsburgh is in the southern half of the state. There we go!

May I steal your icon?

When I was doing my student teaching I had 4 classes of 11th grade U.S. history. Out of curiosity, I gave them a blank map of the U.S. and asked them to label the states. They had warning. probably about 50% of them got less than 20 of them right. That's 16/17 year old American students/ Needless to say, this does not shock me.

Well, there is a Pittsburg, CA (it pains me to not add that 'h' though).

My brother and sister live in California now, and everyone always assumes that they mean the Pittsburgh without an 'h', even if they're wearing a Penguins jersey.
