A Bit old.... but first time posting...

On New Years Eve I was going to a friends house party and this is one of the conversations that occurred:

Friend: I made us Jello Shots... we have to do some tonight
Me: umm... I am a vegetarian, I don't eat Jello
friend: Why?
Me: Because of the Gelatin
Friend: O right Gelatin is Whale right?
Me: no no... Its usually pig bone
friend: Its not like your Kosher or anything
Me:Right... I AM A VEGETARIAN
Friend: But it isnt the meat!
Me: Yes... but they still have to kill the animal.....
Friend: O

and let me tell you.. she spent the entire night going around asking friends if they knew that Gelatin was NOT from Whale... needless to say this VERY smart girl got a lot of head shaking

I'm not even veg and I think gelatin's gross. I mean, who wants to eat boiled bone/skin products?

But yeah, I had to prove to my dad what it was since he didn't believe me.

I know this conversation only to well!I've been veggie about ten years, and without fail, every year around the dinner table at christmas time, this conversation would happen:

Grandad:"Want some turkey?"
ME:"No thanks, I don't eat meat remember"
Grandad:"I know, but it's a holiday, surely you're allowed have some today"

people just don't get it sometimes...

Every time I am sick my grandmother tries to get me to eat chicken soup, and when i point out that I don't eat meat she says she will pick the pieces of meat out of my soup!!!!

Whenever someone suggests I pick some meat out of my food before I eat it, I ask them: "If a dog crapped on your pizza, would you pick it off and eat it?"

WONDERFUL analogy! *Makes a note* I'm not vegetarian, but my brother 'doesn't believe' in allergies unless they're bad enough you have to visit a hospital.

Thank you! I've been trying to think of a good analogy myself. I usually ask people if they'd tell an Orthodox Jew to pick pork out of soup/off of pizza/wherever.

When I went to Russia they had this stew on and I asked the guy if it was vegetarian. He told me that it was beef, but it would be vegetarian if I picked the meat out!

Needless to say, I had the salad.

Without it there can be no real French Onion soup.

*cheers for stock*

I get it, I almost got nightmares after that episode.

Urgh me too. Watxched it last night so it was quickly followed by the next ep. which helped take the pain/urgh away.

I love your icon. And your username.

Well, I had no idea what gelatin was made of, mainly because I never cared enough to find out, but at least I have enough sense/manners to drop it the first time that you said "no"

Not all gelatin is from animals. Some varieties come from seaweed. :)
15th-Feb-2008 02:17 pm (UTC)
None however are from whale. ;)
15th-Feb-2008 07:25 pm (UTC)
Then they aren't gelatin. They may resemble a gelatin dessert, but they are actually made of agar.
15th-Feb-2008 10:25 pm (UTC)
Gelatine always come from animals. Similar products made from seaweed are called something different (The main ones I know are Agar Agar and Carrageen.)

Even if she were right, I'm pretty sure vegetarians don't eat whales!

But they're not meat! They're from the sea! ;-)

I was a security guard at General Foods Atlantic Gelatin plant.

The stench from those pig and cow hides was something awful.

I have to admit though...for pure gross factor the DeCosta Sausage company had AtGel beat (picture workers in full body suits standing hip deep in vats of ground meat - ew!).
