Candle Opera?
5th-Jul-2007 09:57 am
Sexxxy
I belong to Freecycle in my area (a yahoogroups for trading junk or household items you just want out of your house), and I saw this come across the list recently:

"I have a Candle Opera that holds 9 candles at various heights. It is
made of some kind of metal. The tallest candle sits about 3 1/2 feet
from the floor. It is designed for outdoor use and would look nice on a
patio."

Candle Opera = A large candle holder? Shouldn't that be Candelabra?

Hehe!

You should check out bestoffreecycle (sorry, don't know how to do links) you can find it in my user info.

Ahh... the joys of spell checkers.
9th-Jul-2007 04:29 am (UTC)
Well, both words are spelled right. Spell check wouldn't pick up on it.

Thats awesome. I love when people give away their chester drawers.

I know Chester, and I do *not* want his drawers :P

Candle Opera = Lumiere's job before Beauty and the Beast

Win.

Hee!

That reminded me of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfic I read once which tried to explain that Willow graduated head of her class by saying that she was a "valid victorian."

As opposed to an invalid Queenslander?

Heheh. You just reminded me that someone on my Freecycle is trying to get rid of "hangars"...the location is quite near the airport, too...

heh...I read that as "It is designed for outdoor use and would look nice on a
piano" and thought that was the mock. Haven't had my coffee yet.

hmmm. ooookaaay :)

I make jokes to my Australian husband about his (and all other Aussies) inability to pronounce the letter "r". I have asked him how he knows if a word is spelt with an r or an a at the end of it. He said you just know.

Flash forward to last week on freecycle when I saw a woman selling "parkers". I had no idea what a parker was, so I went to investigate. Apparently it is a winter jacket...which I would spell as parka.

LOL. I find my near-inability to pronounce that letter really effin' irritating. It makes pronouncing non-English words with them really hard, because they just want to blend into the vowel sounds like 'normal', and many languages have rolled R's, which I can't do at all.

LOL, reminds me of when a friend posted about wanting to see Circus Olay - took me a minute to figure out what the hell she meant.
9th-Jul-2007 03:17 pm (UTC)
I pictured a circus themed bullfight just now.

Ahh, Cirque, another healthy severing of Mock. On Live365 there is at least one web radio station devoted to playing Cirque du Soleil music. I decided to see if one of them was any good, and was listening happily for several minutes until the DJ came on and said "That was such and such song by Cirque du Soliel" and pronounced 'Soliel' as 'Soleel. *facepalm*

I'm fascinated by things like that - one of the best ones I saw recently was someone talking about the beliefs of "Acidic Jews". (But then, he wasn't very bright.)

And if you Google the invented phrase "lamence terms", you get quite a distressing number of results.

lol x2 hehe, that's just awful :)
12th-Jul-2007 09:11 am (UTC)
hehe, eggcorns! (Although technically if it were a spellchecker error I don't think it would count.)
12th-Jul-2007 07:36 pm (UTC)
Haha, that kind of error reminds me of the teacher my mom subbed for one time - he was busy teaching his students about geology and Teutonic plates. :D

My coworker constantly files her paperwork in vanilla folders and offers vanilla envelopes for mailing purposes.

A former coworker insisted we had rod iron gates in front of our building. I don't think it's even iron. I think it's some other metal painted black.

Spellcheck error!

Though frankly I might well buy a ticket to a candle opera if I liked the libretto!
