Poking idiots in the eye since 2002
...it's mocktacular!
"No, I just like watching the pretty moving pictures..."

This happened a few weeks ago, I've just forgotten about it until last night when I was talking to hubby about it. It was when hubby's brother and brother's girlfriend were both living at our place. Every night around the same time I'd go downstairs to cook something for my hubby, my daughter, and me, and they would be downstairs in the living room watching the same subtitled anime series on the Crunchyroll channel on Roku. This was a fairly ordinary occurrence for the past two weeks and I didn't think anything of it. However, as I was getting finished with the meal, I happened to hear the following conversation as the anime ended:

HB: That show's finally starting to get interesting.
GF: Yeah, but don't you ever wonder what it is they're saying?
HB: What do you mean?
GF: Like what all that stuff means in English.
HB: ...There are words translated at the bottom of the screen. Didn't you see them?
GF: Yeah, I just thought those were extended credits or something.

Keep in mind, those two have been watching the same subtitled anime together for at least two weeks (that I've seen) and she's never figured out the entire time that there was a translation at the bottom of the screen. Extended credits throughout the whole show - who does that?

That... would be a lot of credits... Do they even have that many people working on one of these episodes?

Meanwhile, she must have the patience of Job to sit through 2 weeks x 30 min (give or take) of something where she doesn't understand a word of what's going on. The "moving pictures" aren't always a good indication either. For example... can you imagine watching FlCl with in Japanese with no subtitles? It's insane enough with a script, but without, I think my head would explode.

Also...how can you NOT read the lines? Whenever something is subtitled, my brain *forces* me to read the text, even if film AND subtitles are in my own language (or in different languages I both understand).

Ugh, this. There is a show I watch on DVD where I invariably enable the subtitles, because half of the characters mumble and I can't understand them. When I can understand the dialogue, my brain still insists on reading the subtitles and it really, really annoys me.

I do this with a couple of series I watch with very diverse characters and accents. I have a hell of a time following dialogue with multiple accents flying around.

This. I have friends who are hard of hearing, and therefore keep the subtitles going and the sound on, so that they can catch what they didn't hear. I ALWAYS find myself reading the subtitles, even if they are two scenes behind.

That's what I was thinking at the time too! I remember hearing in an art class a long time ago about not putting a lot if any wording in our paintings because the eye is naturally drawn to them. So I have no idea what happened there lol.

I suppose it depends on the anime; some are visual enough to appreciate even without the words. For instance, I first saw Spirited Away "raw", and though I missed more than a couple plot points, it was such a beautifully presented piece that I was blown away anyway.

I think what's more idiotic is she just kept watching this anime without saying anything... I mean if she really wasn't familiar with the fact that foreign movies or shows can be translated, at least say, "That looks cool, but I don't understand what they are saying..." Then her husband could politely point out that it's being translated at the bottom.. But even so, it's very dumb to not know this very fact or not even notice the translations... =/

I am keenly interested in what the boyfriend thought after that little exchange.

"At least she's hot" would be my guess...

He didn't say it but very well could've been thinking of it lol.

When hubby and I were talking with him about it, he said his mind went totally blank for a second and didn't know quite how to answer. She apparently says a lot of stupid things, but he thinks that was probably the worst ever.

Clearly he wasn't attracted to her for her big brains...

I got nuthin.

I wonder if she needs her eyes checked. I once realized it was time to get a new prescription when I had trouble reading subtitles on a movie. The "extended credits" theory is bizarre, but not being able to make out the words would at least explain how she didn't notice they were dialogue and not credits. As others have already pointed out, it's hard not to read subtitles.

Only way I can think this is rationally possible is that she's probably dyslexic and can't read as fast to follow through the entire thing.
